Sectional Semifinal vs. Prairie Ridge

From The Daily Herald

Experience shows as Prairie Ridge stops Barrington

Barrington High School first-year girls volleyball coach Kathleen Russell just watched in amazement.

Russell was impressed with undefeated and top-ranked Prairie Ridge after the Wolves defeated the No. 4 Fillies 25-15, 25-21 in a Hoffman Estates Class AA sectional semifinal Tuesday night.

“PR is such a seasoned and experienced team,” said Russell. “They have five seniors who played a lot last season and we have two seniors. We are very young and inexperienced.

“We were very nervous at the beginning of the first game and froze out there. But, overall we played well and with a lot of effort.”

Prairie Ridge (38-0) will play No. 5 seeded and cross-town rival Crystal Lake Central (31-7) for the sectional crown at 7 p.m. Thursday. Central toppled No. 6 Lake Zurich 25-22, 25-23.

Barrington, which ends its season 22-15, played the Wolves tough during the early portion of Game 1. An ace by Lauren Weidner gave the Fillies a 10-8 advantage.

But, Prairie Ridge roared back courtesy of the outstanding combination of junior setter Hillary Haen and junior hitter Jackie Nissen. Nissen, off 5 assists from Haen, delivered 5 kills along with 2 aces from Mallory Ladd and Prairie Ridge reeled off 11 straight points to take a 19-10 lead.

Barrington never recovered as the Wolves won Game 1 capped by a kill from Haen.

Prairie Ridge transferred the momentum from the end of Game 1 to the beginning of Game 2. A kill by Sarah Osmun propelled the Wolves to an early 10-3 lead.

However, the Fillies methodically whittled away their deficit and got within 20-19 after an ace by Autumn Worozaken. But they couldn’t get any closer as a kill by Ashley Doherty gave the Wolves the victory.

Nissen led Prairie Ridge with 10 kills and Amanda Heesch delivered 7 kills. Haen had 33 set assists, 5 kills and 3 aces for the winners.

“We were a little slow at the beginning and we didn’t have our rhythm,” said Haen. “We finally got some energy and Jackie (Nissen) had some great kills. I just kept setting her because she was on.

“It is always awesome to beat Barrington. Coach (Stephanie) Otto impresses upon us that every match in the tournament is a one-game series. We were 1-0 tonight and we move on to Thursday.”

Worozaken led the Fillies with 4 kills while Lexi Zimmerman had 12 assists.

“We played well enough to win,” Otto said. “We weren’t in rhythm and didn’t do anything well except maybe serve well. We need to play better Thursday.”

Regional Final vs. Rolling Meadows - October 29th

From The Daily Herald

Some preseason prognosticators didn’t think much of the Barrington girls volleyball team prospects this season.

“Everyone said it was going to be a rebuilding year,” said first-year Barrington coach Kathleen Russell. “They gave us no chance. But I don’t think any of our players felt that way.”

The Fillies sure didn’t feel that way Saturday afternoon in Rolling Meadows, as Barrington defeated the Mustangs 23-25, 25-19, 25-22 to claim the regional championship.

The No. 4-seeded Fillies (23--14) advance to the Hoffman Estates sectional semifinal on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and will meet top-seeded Prairie Ridge.

“No one thought we would be here,” said Barrington defensive specialists Megan Asher. “It’s a great feeling to prove everyone wrong.”

Despite the loss, Rolling Meadows proved they belonged. The Mustangs overcame the loss of their regular setter to come within a few points of winning the regional.

Senior Megan Sabal went out with a leg injury in the first game after diving into the stands to attempt a dig, leaving the setting duties for the remainder of the game to Morgan Schaefer.

Schaefer filled in admirably as the senior was 61-for-61 setting with 13 assists.

“This is the most I’ve ever set in a real game,” said Schaefer. “It feels great to know I held my own.”

Sabal went to the sidelines with the score tied 20-20 in game 1, but Schaefer saved the day with a left-handed kill to give Meadows the first game victory.

“I felt that they were doing well,” said Russell of her team after the Game 1 loss. “They were in control, but they were so excited, their adrenaline was going so much.”

“We felt we could play with them,” added Barrington setter Lexi Zimmerman. “After the first-game loss, we realized how much harder we had to push.”

Meadows took an early lead in Game 2 with Sarah Cooper (27-of-29 on attack, 15 kills, 2 aces) and Kyrsten Becker (5 kills, 1 ace) playing well, but Barrington came back behind Autumn Worozaken (10 kills) and Zimmerman (19 assists, 9 kills) to even the match.

Meadows trailed 10-4 in the deciding game before rallying to trail only 23-22 late.

Then Barrington’s Natalie Barton hit a strong kill, and Asher finished off the match emphatically with an ace.

“It was invigorating, amazing,” Asher said. “It means lot. Basically, it confirms all of our hard work and desire.”

“I’m extremely proud of our team,” Rolling Meadows coach Janet Opels said. “Who knows what could have happened with just a break or two down the stretch.

“We lost the match, but we’re not losers,” Opels added. “We battled the entire way. We came within 3 points of a win despite playing two games without our regular setter.”

Sarah Camodeca of Meadows was 9-for-9 on service with an ace and 16-of-19 on serve receive, while teammate Charlotte Milas recorded 9 blocks and 5 kills.

Chelsea Nagle was 13-of-15 on attack with 8 kills for the Fillies.

Regional Semifinal vs. Fremd - October 26th

From The Daily Herald:

Tough battle to Barrington
Fillies hold off MSL West rival Fremd in three
There’s a reason why most coaches don’t favor the IHSA’s preference of putting teams from the same conference in the same sectional complex.

Even though Barrington defeated Mid-Suburban West rival Fremd in both of their meetings this season, the third encounter was another hard-fought battle that eventually went Barrington’s way 25-22, 20-25, 25-21 in Wednesday’s semifinals of the Class AA Rolling Meadows regional.

Barrington, the No. 4 seed in the Hoffman Estates sectional complex, advances to Saturday’s 3 p.m. regional final.

The Fillies (22-15) will play host Meadows, the No. 7 seed, which defeated No. 10 Conant 25-13, 25-20 in the second semifinal Wednesday.

“I thought we played an outstanding match,” said Fremd coach Curt Pinley. “In fact I thought we played a better game than they did but in order to beat a team like that, you have to play even better.”

There wasn’t much difference between Barrington and Fremd (15-22), the No. 14 seed, in the first game.

The teams traded the lead five times. By the time the score was 6-6, they had already been tied six times.

At 13-13, kills by Natalie Barton and Lexi Zimmerman helped Barrington build a 15-13 lead.

But Fremd stayed close behind kills from Ashley Dipasquale and Katharine Leginski and managed to tie the game at 20-20.

But kills by Barton and Chelsea Nagle put Barrington ahead 22-20, and the game ended on kills by Barton and Melanie Lorenz.

Fremd got off to a 5-0 lead in Game 2 behind 3 straight aces by Ester Mellado, and the Vikings maintained their advantage the rest of the way.

“We made a lot of hitting errors,” said Barrington coach Kathleen Russell. “Our defense and hitter errors were terrible in the second game.

“We just have to get in the habit of playing our game. They want someone to get the ball but they need to talk to each other more, which they did in the third game.”

The third game resembled the first. Tied at 3-3, Fremd took the lead and held it until a 4-0 run cut it to 12-10.

Down 12-11, Barrington scored 6 of the next 8 points to go in front for good.

“We got down in Game 3 a bit,” Pinley said. “We dug a hole and it’s tough to come back, but I thought we showed a lot of character in coming back.”

“We turned it around defensively,” Russell said. “Autumn (Worozaken) was just bombing them.”

Worozaken had several key kills for the Fillies, finishing with a match-high 13, while setter Caroline Vanacker came up with some outstanding defensive plays for the Vikings.

“She’s been the heart and soul of out team all year,” Pinley said. “She brought that something extra tonight and kept us in the game.”

At Conant - October 11th

From The Daily Herald:

Fillies continue MSL division perfection

Barrington coach Kathleen Russell waited and waited for the Fillies to pull out of their deficit.

She held back from calling a timeout when they struggled and eventually fell in the second game to Conant. She continued to refrain from using a timeout when the Cougars took an early lead in Game 3.

It wasn’t until her patience had dwindled and Conant pulled ahead 18-13 that Russell decided enough was enough and called for time.

She pinpointed where the mistakes were being made, put senior captain Chelsea Nagle back in and sent the Fillies out to the court.

It was just what Barrington needed as it rallied to win the third game and complete its fifth straight undefeated MSL West season. The Fillies defeated Conant 25-23, 23-25, 25-23 for their 56th straight division win.

Barrington (16-8, 10-0) will host Hersey on Oct. 19 for the MSL crown.

“I expect the girls to push themselves,” Russell said. “When I called timeout we needed to change some things up and slow them down.

“Conant was playing with a lot of adrenaline. You don’t want to beat anyone on their senior night, but we wanted to keep the conference streak going, so we had to win. It’s not important for me because it’s my first year, but it’s important to the school and the girls.”

It was in the back of Barrington junior Amy Raseman’s mind.

The Fillies were behind late in the third game and their hitting hadn’t found many holes.

When setter Lexi Zimmerman went to Raseman in that situation, she didn’t let her team down. Raseman, a 5-foot-11 lefty, smashed a shot past Conant’s defense to pull Barrington within 19-15.

Zimmerman went back to Raseman on the following two plays. Each had the same result against the Cougars (16-12, 5-5).

Raseman (10 kills) would add another kill to tie the match at 21-21. “We struggled a lot more than we had hoped to,” Raseman said. “But it was a good, intense match to end conference.”

At Hoffman Estates - October 6th

From The Daily Herald:

Fillies are champs again

Barrington’s 25-11, 25-19 victory clinched its sixth straight Mid-Suburban West title and first for rookie girls coach Kathleen Russell.

The Fillies (16-7, 9-0) took an 8-2 lead in Game 1 and never looked back.

The Hawks (4-18, 0-9) played tough but Barrington’s crisp play left little room for error on the Hawks’ side of the court.

“We got to play a lot of girls,” Russell said. “We have been working on our serving and it showed today.”

Barrington seemed to be in sync early by serving several aces and never wasted a chance to score on a kill.

Hoffman adjusted in the second game, but its improved play came a little too late.

The Hawks took an 8-5 lead in Game 2 and seemed poised for an upset.

“We played better in the second game,” said Hoffman coach Angela Drenth. “They (Barrington) were just a little quicker than us; we need to work a little on our blocking so we will be ready for Schaumburg on Tuesday.”

Leading the Barrington attack were Autumn Worozaken (8 kills), Natalie Barton (6) and Jackie Patmor (3) while setter Lexi Zimmerman (43-of-43) handed out 18 assists.

“Our timing is good right now and we feel we’re playing pretty well,” Russell said. “We committed a few errors, but we feel we’re getting to where we need to be.”

The Fillies, who have won 55 straight in the MSL West, will see some solid competition today and Saturday at the St. Charles Invite.

At Lake Zurich - October 4th

From The Daily Herald:

Berwanger leads Lake Zurich to thrilling win

The Lake Zurich girls volleyball team sleepwalked through the start of its home match Tuesday against Barrington.

The Bears lost the first game 25-18 and trailed 16-8 in the following game.

“We knew we could play a lot better than that,” senior Lauren Sandelin.

Which is exactly what the Bears proceeded to do.

Lake Zurich rallied and took the second game 25-23 and then won a wild third game 28-26 to earn a significant victory going into tonight’s seeding meeting for the regional.

“We want to get a top-four seed so we don’t see Prairie Ridge in the regional,” Lake Zurich coach Michelle Jakubowski said.

The Bears quickly erased their deficit in the second game behind strong serving from senior Meghan Zins.

With the score tied 20-20, the Barrington bench was given a red card. By rule, Lake Zurich was awarded a point and led 21-20.

Lake Zurich strung together three more points before Natalie Barton came through with a kill. After surrendering two more points, Lake Zurich senior Jen Berwanger’s kill put the game away.

“I told the girls to take (the point) and go,” Jakubowski said. “That was huge.”

Lake Zurich (15-7) and Barrington (15-8) played great in the third game.

Berwanger, who had a match-high 18 kills, came through with several key Lake Zurich points.

“It’s no secret where we’re going, and she really came through,” Jakubowski said.

Added Berwanger: “My teammates helped me a lot by talking and telling me where the blockers were.”

After going through a lull in the second game, Barrington played focused and emotional volleyball the rest of the way.

“We were more intense and when we made mistakes they were aggressive mistakes,” setter Lexi Zimmerman said.

Lake Zurich enjoyed leads of 20-15 and 24-20 but could not put Barrington away. The Fillies’ Autumn Worozaken, who had 3 of her 8 kills in the final game, recorded an ace to give her team a 25-24 advantage.

A Berwanger kill tied the score at 25-25 and the Bears went ahead 27-26. This time, they were able to close out Barrington on a kill by Sandelin.

“I was a little nervous, but I wanted the ball,” she said. “I put it over and it worked out.”

Barton’s 9 kills topped Barrington. Zimmerman had a big all-around game with 28 assists, 3 blocks and 5 digs. Jennifer Borchers contributed 3 aces.

For Lake Zurich, Crystal Wright had 6 kills and 4 aces.

“It felt like were going through the motions early,” Berwanger said. “(Fortunately), we really picked it up.”

Some Homecoming Parade Pics

Friday, September 30, 2005

Fremd - September 29th

From The Daily Herald:

Fillies clinch tie in MSL West

Senior’s Night was extra special for the Barrington girls volleyball team Thursday because it also clinched a tie for first in the Mid-Suburban West.

With a 25-19, 26-24 triumph over visiting Fremd, the Fillies improved to 8-0 in the West and 14-7 overall. They have a two-match lead over Schaumburg (6-2) with two to play.

Seniors Chelsea Nagle (6 kills), Jennie Cramer (5 kills), Siedah Thompson, Rosanna LaPorta and Courtney Wilson all contributed at least 1 kill for the Fillies, who will try to clinch a sixth straight berth in the MSL championship game when they visit Hoffman Estates on Thursday.

Junior Autumn Worozaken led Barrington with 9 kills and setter Lexi Zimmerman (60-of-61) handed out 30 assists and also had 4 kills.

“It was really a great night because the seniors all got a lot of playing time,” said Fillies coach Kathleen Russell, whose club stretched its West winning streak to 54 in a row.

More Homecoming Parade Information

  • The girls should wear their new sweatshirts and jeans and gym shoes (not their volleyball shoes).
  • Lexi & Autumn will provide their wrangler convertibles for the coaches to drive. A few players can ride with the coaches. (Kathy Steiger will ask around to see if any other volleyball families have wrangler convertibles that they would like the coaches to drive along).
  • The cars will all tune to the same radio station and provide stereo music to accompany the marchers.
  • The cars can be decorated with posters and helium balloons.
  • The large Volleyball sign can be carried by girls. (We need to take care of this expensive sign).
  • The girls should save decorations from Senior Nite and carry posters and balloons for a festive effect.
  • There will be a large bag of candy in Lexi's car. There will also be individual bags for each girl. Each girl should take some candy in a bag with her so that she can throw it out during the parade. Each girl can also take one of the small volleyballs and throw that out as well.
  • Kathy Steiger will check with Paul Gillette to ascertain where and when the girls should meet. Lynn Barton got the float registration and approval to throw out the candy.

St. Charles East - September 29th

From The Daily Herald
By John Leusch

The Village People blasted from the ceiling speakers and the Barrington girls volleyball team danced. It wasn’t a post-game celebration. Nor was it a pregame ritual.

It was a St. Charles East timeout.

The Fillies (13-7) were so close to the top of their game Wednesday that their coaches had little to say during the Saints’ timeouts. Instead, the reserves formed a circle and the starters danced within it.

They carried the energy out with them back to the court and finished the job of avenging an early-season loss to St. Charles East with a 25-17, 25-18 victory at home.

“I think this is the best we’ve played,” Barrington junior setter Lexi Zimmerman said. “It ended up being a hit-fest. Their blocking wasn’t that good and our hitting was really on tonight.”

Zimmerman did her own part in making that happen.

With a recent change in Barrington’s system, Zimmerman has more of a chance to show off her athleticism and get involved in the team’s hitting and blocking.

It worked to perfection against the Saints (9-11) as Zimmerman, who has already committed to Michigan, finished with 6 kills, 3 blocks and match-high 21 assists.

“That’s one of the reasons I became a setter,” Zimmerman said. “You have the most control of what you do. It’s really awesome when you make the right choice and the middle (blocker) isn’t there.”

Autumn Worozaken (9 kills), Natalie Barton (5 kills) and Chelsea Nagle (5 kills) were among Barrington’s hitting leaders.

The Saints led 15-13 in Game 1 but Barrington outscored them 12-2 the rest of the way.

“They were dancing on the bench (during timeouts),” said Barrington coach Kathleen Russell. “That’s doesn’t happen very often. If we win big in a game, it seems we get comfortable. This time they came out fighting. That’s a big improvement for us.”

Homecoming Parade

The BHS Volleyball teams will be marching in the Homecoming Parade this Saturday, October 1st.

The teams should meet at the train station at 8:15am, wearing their red sweatshirts with jeans or black warmup pants. They will walk and throw candy. We will also have the volleyball banner and 2 jeep vehicles that the coaches will drive.

October 7th - Northwestern vs. Penn State & Laura Holloway

On Friday, October 7th after school the girls (all teams except varsity, who will have a tournament in St. Charles) will be taking a bus trip to Northwestern University in Evanston. Northwestern will be playing Penn State and Laura Holloway, a senior from last year, who plays for the Nittany Lions.

Laura is really excited that we are coming to cheer her on and the girls will really enjoy the experience of seeing a college game, and one of their own playing in it!

Boosters has generously donated the bus for us so all the girls need to do is bring $5-10 for admission and treats.

Schaumburg - September 27th

From The Daily Herald

Nagle is Fillies’ ace card
By John Leusch
Daily Herald Sports Writer

It was fitting that Barrington senior Chelsea Nagle finished Tuesday’s volleyball match against visiting Schaumburg with an ace.

After all, serving has been the main focus in the Fillies’ recent practices. The practice paid off as they missed only 3 serves and recorded 8 aces in a 25-19, 25-16 victory.

The Fillies’ 53rd straight win in the Mid-Suburban West gives them a 7-0 record this fall, two matches ahead of Schaumburg (12-7, 5-2).

“They’re (Schaumburg) definitely one of the most competitive teams in the conference,” Nagle said. “We’re always excited no matter who we play, but we knew we had to be serious for this match.”

Nagle led the Fillies (12-7) at the service line with 4 aces while Natalie Barton added 3.

“We’ve been working on serving aggressively and consistent,” said Nagle, who also had 2 kills. “We’ve been serving from farther back to make it tougher for the other team to pass.”

Junior Autumn Worozaken paced the Fillies’ attack with 7 kills, followed by Barton (6) and Amy Raseman (3).

The first game was tied for the first 7 points before Schaumburg took control 11-7. The lead grew to 16-12 on an ace by sophomore setter Drewann Pancratz.

But the Fillies battled back and 4 straight service points by Nagle put them ahead 17-16.

After the Saxons tied the game at 17, Barrington went ahead on a kill by Lexi Zimmerman (47-48, 17 assists) and never trailed again.

Nagle delivered an ace and Zimmerman set up Worozaken for a kill and 20-17 lead.

“Schaumburg came out really strong,” Worozaken said. “You could tell they were gunning for us, so it was important to get ahead and take away their excitement.”

“Obviously we were concerned about (Amy) Reichel (Saxons’ standout middle hitter),” said Barrington coach Rob Ridenour, who was filling in for head coach Kathleen Russell (illness). “When you serve well, you take the middle hitter out of the game. And Lexi (Zimmerman) did a nice job matching up in the middle.”

Barrington jumped ahead 5-1 in Game 2 but the Saxons evened it at 5-5 when Pancratz (12 assists, 12 digs) lifted a set over her head to Reichel (6 kills) for the kill.

Moments later, Nagle served 3 straight points for a 10-6 lead and the Fillies never looked back.

Zimmerman made a quick pop-up set to Worozaken for a back row kill and 21-14 advantage. A kill by Deanna Sanchez (5 kills, 8 digs) cut the lead to 22-16 before Nagle served out the match.

“We’ve been working on our serving,” Ridenour said. “We’re not the biggest blocking team so we’ve got to serve tough. It all came together tonight. Missing only 3 serves had to be close to our best effort yet.”

Keesha Duminie added 2 kills and libero Stacey Wernert collected 9 digs for the Saxons, who visit Palatine today.

“The disappointing thing is that we’re not playing to win,” said Schaumburg coach Jeanette Pancratz. “We had some serving errors that didn’t help. And our passing was erratic. The bottom line, though, is that we can overcome those things. We play hard but we’re not going after it. We need an edge, we need kids to compete and lay it on the line.”

At Palatine - September 21st

From The Daily Herald:

Fillies Win In Three
By Kathy Rudolph

In the second game of this MSL West matchup between Barrington and Palatine, the host Pirates showed a glimpse of just how well they can play the game.

But there was never much doubt as to who would wind up on the winning side of this one.

Behind a balanced attack, Barrington went on to take a 25-18, 21-25, 25-10 victory.

That gave the Fillies a 12-6 record on the season and ran their record in the West to 6-0. They have now won 52 consecutive conference matches.

However, while winning has become a habit for Barrington, complacency hasn't.

“Today they were more excited than they've ever been,” said Barrington coach Kathleen Russell. “In the third game, they showed even more excitement.”

That came after Palatine (7-6, 2-4) took the second game behind the outside hitting of Natalie Butler (7 kills), some outstanding defense and the serving of Kaitlyn Gallagher.

With Barrington leading 12-7, a couple of errors and an overlap violation made it 12-10. Gallagher then jump-served 4 aces in a row to put her team in front 14-12.

"We just sat back on our heels," Russell said.

Barrington tied it at 15-15 on a rollover ace by Chelsea Nagle (5 kills, 4 aces), but a tip by Elaina Ziehm put Palatine back in front for good. The game ended on a kill and another ace by Gallagher (6 kills, 6 aces) and a kill by Kelli Urban (4 kills).

“Our servers went on some runs and we passed the ball well on serve receive,” said Palatine coach Dawn Shepherd. “When our serve receive breaks down, we struggle.”

That happened in the third game and Barrington didn't waste time taking advantage.

The Fillies went out to a 4-0 lead on a kill by Jennifer Borchers (6-for-6, 6 kills) and 3 errors. Leading 14-5, Autumn Worozaken (9 kills) scored 3 of the next 4 points on a tip and 2 aces.

Conant - September 20th

From The Daily Herald:

Fillies turn back inspired Conant

Barrington was pushed to the limit on Tuesday night but continued its Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball winning streak.

Conant gave the Fillies all they could handle as the decisive third game was tied at 22-22.

That’s when Autumn Worozaken provided a much-needed spark, scoring 2 points on kills before match point as Barrington claimed a 25-22, 18-25, 25-22 victory. It was the Fillies’ 51st consecutive win in the West.

“Autumn brings such a fire to the team,” said first-year Barrington coach Kathleen Russell of her junior outside hitter. “They really don’t talk about the streak, they talk about how they will play as a team. They just want to win.”

Barrington (11-6, 5-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the final game and was clinging to an 11-9 lead before Conant (8-8, 2-3) scored the next 5 points to take a 13-11 advantage.

A gritty Cougar squad held an 18-16 advantage when Barrington’s Lexi Zimmerman (3 kills) and Natalie Barton (4 kills) led the Fillies to a 21-18 lead.

But Mandy Michna came up with a clean kill for Conant to tie the score at 22-22.

Worozaken (20-of-22 on attack, 6 kills) then came up with her 2 deciding points.

“It was a little shaky,” said Worozaken, who admitted the streak has made the Fillies a marked team. “It feels like there’s a target on us and everybody is pumped up to play us. We have to fight for it — we have more to lose than everybody else.”

Zimmerman (30 assists) also sparked the Fillies in her setter role.

“Once we step on the court, all we talk about is volleyball,” said Zimmerman of her team’s focus. “The intensity level picks up.”

The Fillies led the first game 24-19, before the Cougars went on a 3-0 run to narrow the deficit to 2 points. But Jenny Borcher had a kill to give Barrington game point.

Michna had 10 consecutive service points to lead Conant to a 13-2 lead in the second game. The Fillies had a number of unforced errors in the game, which led to the decisive game.

Alexa Hansen (7 kills) and Kailey Kassner (5 kills) supported the Cougars with a strong showing around the net.

“The girls did a phenomenal job,” said Conant coach Peggy Scholten, who won her 502nd match on Saturday. “They’re not going to fall apart. These kids are here to battle and here to compete.”
